Plot summary
In San Francisco, Joseph Van Aston is heir to a real estate fortune and passes his days in luxury. His mother, who runs the family company, sends him to Petaluma to close a deal on a dairy farm whose owner has refused every buyout. Callie Bernet is hardworking and headstrong, and the farm means more to her than money, though she is heavily in debt. Her little sister Hannah and her mother Wendy, who has cancer, live there with her. Joseph arrives as Callie is busy with a cow giving birth, and she takes him for Manny, the ranch hand due to start work. Knowing nothing about farmwork, he poses as Manny to gain her trust. His butler Leo is sent to look for the real Manny and pay him to stay away.
