Plot summary
David Hockney's break-up with Peter Schlesinger leaves the painter unable to work. Friends in his circle, among them the designers Celia Birtwell and Ossie Clark, the artist Patrick Procktor, the gallery owner John Kasmin and the curator Henry Geldzahler, are concerned for him. The documentary covers the years from 1970 to 1973, is intercut with fictionalized and imagined scenes, and takes its name from Hockney's painting A Bigger Splash, his picture of a Californian swimming pool.
