Ariane Felder is a judge in her forties, unmarried and unwilling to date. On New Year's Eve her colleagues push her to drink, and she lets herself go. Six months afterward she learns she is expecting a child. She has no memory of that night and cannot name the father, so she looks into it herself. The answer is Robert Nolan, known as Bob Nolan, a burglar and repeat offender suspected of cutting off an old man's four limbs. He is in custody when she meets him.
