Plot summary
Jason Cartwright, clumsy and awkward, is struggling to find love, and a string of disastrous online dates has not helped. Then he connects with Rachel, a Filipina woman, and the two begin a long-distance relationship. Hoping to fund a trip to meet her in person, Jason volunteers for a secret experiment run by Dr. Danielle Zeilenger, whose 8V40 device promises to move a person instantly between places. The trial delivers him not to Edinburgh but to Rachel's small village in the Philippines, where he is in her world without her knowledge, while Dr. Zeilenger's team searches for him and the military, which has its own interest in the technology, presses to shut the experiment down.
