Plot summary
Based on real events in Cold War Germany, 23 follows Karl Koch, nineteen and orphaned, who sees the world around him as threatening and chaotic. Reading The Illuminatus! Trilogy, he starts digging into who holds political and economic power, and sees signs of a worldwide conspiracy, a search bound up with his fixation on the number 23. He spends his inheritance on a flat and a home computer. At a Chaos Computer Club meeting he gets to know David, a student, and together they hack into the global data network while it is still in its early stages. Their belief in social justice leads them toward espionage, and Pepe, one of Karl's criminal acquaintances, sees money in computer cracking and sets off for East Berlin to reach the KGB.
