Plot summary
In the middle of a hot summer, Caroline Montez, a Parisian woman of forty and a mother herself, comes to a village in southern France to arrange the funeral of Isabelle, the mother she barely knew and did not get along with. Isabelle had worked as a lawyer. Pattie, a local woman who enjoys telling anyone within earshot about her love affairs with the men of the valley, takes Caroline under her wing and fills her in on the village's gossip. Caroline stays in her mother's house while the whole valley prepares for its traditional mid-summer dance. Then her mother's corpse disappears from the house.
