Plot summary
Dorothea Fields is 55 and has brought up her son Jamie alone in Santa Barbara. Jamie is 15, listens to punk records, and spends his nights with Julie, a 17-year-old friend who comes through his window but wants their friendship to stay as it is. Dorothea finds she cannot connect with her son anymore, so she asks the younger women around her for help: Abbie, a photographer renting a room upstairs while she is treated for cervical cancer, and Julie. Both are meant to guide Jamie toward becoming a good man. William, the carpenter and mechanic who repairs the house, was introduced to Jamie as a male role model. Dorothea writes her stock lists with Jamie each morning, and Abbie lends him books from her feminism class.
