Plot summary
Anna Parisi is a fine arts painter in New York City who cannot make ends meet, and Christmas is two weeks away. Marc Rehnquist, a marketing executive, has no time to shop for his friends and family, so he hires Anna to buy their presents for him. His list includes his mother, Joyce. Working together on the gifts, Marc comes to weigh what a purchase costs against what it means to the person who receives it. Anna, for her part, wonders whether her painting can support her, and whether this job might show her a path as an artist that she never considered.
