Plot summary
In present-day Moscow, twelve men are called for jury duty in the trial of a young Chechen, accused of killing his stepfather, a Russian army officer. The twelve are kept in a school gymnasium, in a makeshift room where the law requires a unanimous verdict. They come from different corners of Russian life: a physicist, the jury foreman, a nationalist taxi driver, an elderly Jew, a retired subway tunneler, a television executive, a surgeon, a comedian, a cemetery manager, an engineer and a dean. The arguments wear on, and the boy's wartime childhood returns in flashbacks. In turn, each man takes the floor, speaking about the case and about himself.

Opposition journalist Zoya Svetova called the film pro-Putin, saying some characters caricature Valeriya Novodvorskaya and producer Dmitry Lesnevsky.
