Plot summary
In 1984, Artyom Kazakov teaches Marxist-Leninist atheism at Leningrad State University and visits his brother Colonel Mikhail Kazakov in the town of Nizhny Volok, meeting his niece Liza and her boyfriend Valera. Driving to Leninsk to see his mother, Artyom's car breaks down near Kalyayevo, and he asks for help at an isolated farmhouse. Alexey, a local moonshiner, lives there with his wife Antonina, a Vietnamese laborer called Sunka and a stranger. Sunka repairs the car, and after Artyom and Alexey drink and argue about God and retribution for sins, Artyom drives on. Valera goes to a discotheque, meets Angelika, and they drive to Alexey's house for more alcohol. Valera stays inside drinking, Angelika waits in the car, and the stranger watches her.
