Plot summary

Kiddo, a god, makes the world a garden and leaves it to those who live there. Her father Birdman imposes order instead, with firm rules about marriage and gender. Agnes marries and bears a daughter named Hero. Years afterward, Cherry lives in a marriage to Jerome that has not been consummated. His family wants an heir and presses him, but he keeps away, and she has one hundred days to conceive or die. Jerome seeks advice from an acquaintance, Manfred, who offers to test her loyalty.
