Plot summary
In late 15th-century Rome, Rodrigo Borgia reigns as Pope Alexander VI. As a cardinal he had four children with Giovanna dei Cattanei, called Vanozza: Juan, Cesare, Lucrezia and Gioffre. Lucrezia has been married for a year to Giovanni Sforza, Duke of Pesaro, and her family seeks an annulment on the ground of his impotence, a step meant to weaken the Sforza of Milan. Her brothers Juan, Duke of Candia, and Cesare both covet her, and a betrothal to Alfonso of Aragon is arranged.
