Plot summary
In a poor village in central Vietnam in the 1980s, a seventh grader named Thiều keeps a diary of his days. His younger brother Tường is gentle and generous, reads folk tales, and keeps a toad named Cu Cậu under his bed, while Thiều's tricks often leave Tường taking the blame. Their one-armed uncle Đàn, their father's younger brother, tells the boys spooky stories and is in love with Vinh, the daughter of Thiều's teacher. At school, Sơn, three years older and still in Thiều's class, causes trouble, and Thiều has a crush on their classmate Mận, who cares for her sick father and struggles with her lessons. Though Thiều seems selfish, he loves Tường, and both brothers look out for Mận.
