Plot summary
Hai Phượng was an ex-gangster, and her father disowned her for her affair with a gangster and her involvement in crime. After her daughter Mai is born, she lies low in the countryside, working as a debt collector and barely supporting the two of them. Mai has been bullied over her mother's reputation and over not having a father, and she wants to leave school to help support her mother. In the market, Hai Phượng sees Mai accused of stealing a wallet, and another witness pressures her to take their side. The accusation hurts Mai, and she runs off, though she had only been handing back a wallet that a drunk man had dropped. While searching for her, Hai Phượng realizes that thugs are capturing Mai.
