Plot summary

An eighteen-year-old drives a cyclo taxi around Ho Chi Minh City, the work his father did until a truck struck and killed him. Poverty leaves him no better choice, though his father had hoped for more for him. He shares a home with his grandfather, who mends tires in spite of poor health, a younger sister who polishes shoes, and an older sister who hauls water in a market. Their routine breaks when a gang takes the cyclo. The young man cannot pay the Lady, who rents him the vehicle and employs him, and the debt draws him into a criminal organization headed by a brooding man known as the Poet.
