Plot summary

Quinn Ackerman, a high school senior, works as the technical director for the Thunderbirds, her school's elite dance team and the reigning champion of the Work It competition. After she sets something on fire by accident, the team's leader, Julliard Pembroke, throws her off the crew. Quinn wants a place at Duke University, her late father's alma mater, but the admissions counselor, Veronica Ramirez, tells her that her chances of standing out are not good. Quinn lets Ramirez believe she dances on the Thunderbirds, and Ramirez says she will come to the competition to watch her. Quinn commits to the lie and asks her best friend, Jasmine Hale, a Thunderbirds dancer, to teach her how to dance, with the team's open auditions only two weeks away.
