Plot summary
Sheryl Bradshaw, a Pennsylvania native, is a struggling actress in Los Angeles who attends auditions with little to show for them. Her agent argues that a turn on television will raise her profile and pushes her to go on The Dating Game. She considers the show shallow and empty, but she agrees and goes to the studio. In the taping, three men sit hidden behind a partition and answer her questions, competing for a weekend trip upstate with her. Sheryl finds the questions she is supposed to read to them sexist and insulting, and she decides to ignore the script. Behind the partition, one of the bachelors is Rodney Alcala, a photographer who has attacked women in several states since 1971.

The film's postscript says Rodney Alcala was released on bail after his arrest and murdered another woman and a young girl, that he was eventually found to have murdered at least seven women and girls, and that an adult Amy testified against him after he had spent 31 years behind bars.
