Plot summary
Seventeen and an outcast at her high school, Clare Shannon still carries the childhood memory of her mother's suicide. Her father, Jonathan, hoards and dumpster dives, and one day he brings home a Chinese music box, which he hands to Clare. She works out that one of its inscriptions means Seven Wishes. When she casually wishes that Darcie, a girl who bullies her, would rot, Darcie comes down with a flesh-eating infection; the same day, the family dog, Max, dies. Clare understands that the box is giving her what she asks for. She turns to a classmate, Ryan Hui, to translate the symbols she cannot read.

- Catherine Hardwicke was removed as director of Wish Upon; producer Sherryl Clark then sent the script to John R. Leonetti, who initially passed because he had other things going on before signing on four months later when a new draft caught his eye.
- A scene in which Carl nearly gets hit by a truck, a nod to Billy Hitchcock's death in Final Destination (2000), was cut from Wish Upon because the filmmakers ultimately did not want it to feel like a Final Destination-style film.
- Joey King was director John R. Leonetti's first choice to play Clare Shannon, since the two had previously worked together on The Conjuring (2013), and he wanted Shannon Purser in the film after seeing her in Stranger Things.
