Plot summary

Reality grows up in Texas, raised by Billie, her mother, who works as a social worker, and by her father Ron, a writer without a job. She cares about languages and social justice. After high school she joins the Air Force, hoping to help in Afghanistan, but she is sent to Fort Meade instead to run surveillance on the Taliban. One night she and KayLee Thompson, a coworker there, handle a translation concerning a suspicious package, and five people are shot. Reality takes up fitness and volunteering, and she begins seeing Andre, a bartender who wants to become a veterinarian.
