Plot summary
Andreas, a widowed pastor, comes to a Danish suburb to lead a parish whose suspended minister drove the congregation away. He takes a room at the local hotel, where he meets Jørgen Mortensen, who has been told to dismiss Hal-Finn, the hotel restaurant's temperamental manager and his closest friend. Hal-Finn calls on Karen, a hairdresser who looks after her ailing mother. Olympia, a bakery clerk, cares for a disabled father who scolds her, and enrolls in a beginner's Italian course to feel closer to her Italian mother. Giulia, the restaurant's Italian assistant, prays for a husband. The six cross paths at the church, the hotel, the restaurant and the adult school.
