Plot summary
China, late 3rd century BC. Rebellions spread against the Qin Empire, and two commanders rise among the rebels: Xiang Yu and Liu Bang, sworn brothers in battle who both answer to King Huai II, figurehead of the restored state of Chu. To keep either man from growing too strong, King Huai II announces that whoever subdues the Qin in Guanzhong will be made Lord of Qin, a prize that sets the two sworn brothers against each other. Xiang Yu takes the rebel army against the main Qin force at Julu and wins; he leaves Yu Ji, the woman he loves, in Liu Bang's keeping. Liu Bang tells Yu Ji of his love for her and, with the Qin army away fighting Xiang Yu, moves on Guanzhong himself.
