Plot summary
Jack Gladney is a professor of Hitler studies at a college in Ohio. He lives with his fourth wife, Babette, and their blended family of four children. Denise, one of the children, finds a hidden stash of Dylar among Babette's things, a drug absent from the usual records. Jack's colleague Murray Siskind teaches American culture and wants a niche field of his own, so he asks Jack to help him build Elvis studies. Then a collision between a train and a truck hauling toxic chemicals releases a cloud of waste that forces an evacuation.
