Plot summary
Dan Cutler runs an advertising agency and arranges a whitewater rafting trip for his executives on Canada's White Mile. To several of the men the invitation amounts to an order, and one of them is decidedly fearful about going. Cutler sees the outing as a test of their confidence, courage and skill, and as a chance for the agency to win back its business swagger and confidence. Nick Karas, a retired executive of the agency, comes along on the trip at the last minute; Cutler expects him to bring in clients, while Nick thinks he is in for a simple fishing trip.

- White Mile is loosely based on a rafting accident on August 1, 1987, on the White Mile rapids in the Bidwell Canyon section of British Columbia's Chilko River. Executives of Chicago agency DDB Needham, plus clients from Kraft, Clorox, Procter & Gamble and the Drug Free America Foundation, were caught in it.

Robert Loggia's character Nick Karas likely represents James Fasules, a retired DDB Needham executive who drowned in the river. Alan Alda's agency president Dan Cutler is plainly modeled on then-DDB Needham president Al Wolfe, who organized the real excursion.SPOILER
Five men died on the real trip: two current and one retired DDB executive, plus one executive each from Procter & Gamble and the Drug Free America Foundation. A court assigned a payout of $1.1 million to the family of the retired DDB executive who died that day.- The film's other characters are largely composites of the real DDB men on the trip. Peter Gallagher's Jack Robbins is completely fictitious, according to Stonehenge Productions executive producer Dick Berg.
- Screenwriter Michael Butler said Al Wolfe, the real agency president the film depicts, did not cooperate with the screenwriting process.
