Plot summary
Sam Hummer drove produce out of Tucson for Red River, and his son Carrol Jo, called CJ, rode along as a boy. After the Air Force CJ comes home to Jerri, marries her and takes a bank loan for a repossessed cabover he paints blue and white and names the Blue Mule. Ready to work for himself, he returns to Red River and finds unfamiliar faces on the docks. Duane Haller tells him the company now moves untaxed cigarettes, slot machines and other contraband, and that drivers who talk lose their jobs. CJ forces his trailer unloaded and vows never to haul illegal cargo, which sets him against Clem and the dock crew.
