Plot summary
Jesco grows up in West Virginia as the son of D. Ray White, the finest of the mountain dancers. From childhood D. Ray steers him toward the Lord, and dancing is one of the ways he keeps the boy's soul from slipping. Voices in Jesco's head torment him, and he gets high on glue, gas and lighter fluid. Run-ins with the law send him to reform school more than once, and he spends much of his adolescence there with the voices for company. Older, he stays as straight as he can and dances in dives across the south, where he meets Enid Carter, a woman of four foot three whom he renames Percilla.
