Plot summary
Manhattan psychiatrist Ann Hecker hears disturbing sadomasochistic stories from patient Eve Abergray. At the same time Ann starts a relationship with Doug McDowell, a pilot in her office building, and asks former instructors Leo and Sarah Green for help with the dreams these stories trigger. After Ann spots Doug at lunch with Eve, Eve tells her that Doug is the lover she has described. Ann suggests Eve find another psychiatrist, but Eve confronts Ann and steals her file. The next day Ann goes to Eve's apartment and finds Eve hanging from a rafter. Detective Larry Morgenstern says Eve died from a skull fracture rather than the hanging, and his homicide investigation begins.

- The MPAA initially gave Whispers in the Dark an NC-17 rating over an explicit sex sequence in the opening credits. Producer Martin Bregman called the rating "arbitrary," and after minimal cuts the film was given an R rating.
- Lou Diamond Phillips and Greta Scacchi were slated to star as Doug McDowell and Ann Hecker, but both actors dropped out. The project was first set up at MCA Television Entertainment and Universal Pictures before landing at Paramount Pictures with a $30 million budget.
- The lake house scenes were shot in Nantucket, Massachusetts, but severe cold weather there at the time pushed some of the waterfront filming to Sebastian, Florida instead.
