Plot summary
A young man's days are given to a few things: snails, salt and a pipe, and finding a way home. A hubristic, racist inner psyche torments him. The characters around him include The Minstrel, a grave digger, mocking tormentors, a concubine, a snail collector, his mother and his fantasy girl. Some of them are part of an inner sanctum and some of an outer sanctum, and a snail has a voice.

- Most of the actors who appear in Crispin Glover's What Is It? have Down syndrome, but Glover has said they are not necessarily playing characters with Down syndrome and the film is not about Down syndrome.
- What Is It? began in 1996 as a short film serving as proof of concept for Glover's unproduced third film, It Is Mine; after finishing it he decided to make it a feature, shooting an additional eight days spread over two years.
- What Is It? was picture locked about three years after the initial shoot, but post-production dragged on six more years, partly because of a technical error with the SMPTE timecode and partly because Glover was making the sequel It Is Fine! Everything Is Fine.
