Plot summary
Heather Langenkamp lives in Los Angeles with her husband Chase and their young son Dylan. She is known for playing Nancy Thompson in the A Nightmare on Elm Street movies. One night she dreams that animated Freddy Krueger claws attack her family; she wakes to an earthquake and finds a cut on Chase's finger. She receives harassing phone calls that quote Freddy's nursery rhyme in his voice. When she is asked to reprise Nancy for a new Nightmare film, Dylan has a terrifying fit about Freddy.

- A sequence scripted for Wes Craven's New Nightmare but never filmed would have turned Robert Englund into a fly trapped in the web of a giant "Freddy-spider", an homage to the 1958 film The Fly; it was cut over time and budget.
- Wes Craven meant to ask Johnny Depp, whose feature film debut was the first A Nightmare on Elm Street, to appear as himself, but was too timid to ask; when they later ran into each other, Depp said he would have been happy to do it.
- The film's earthquake scenes were already written when production happened to run alongside the 1994 Northridge earthquake in Los Angeles, so the production team decided to use real footage of the quake's structural damage in the movie.
- Heather Langenkamp, who played Nancy Thompson, was stalked by an obsessed fan angry that her ABC sitcom Just the Ten of Us had been canceled, and briefly moved to England; in New Nightmare her character is stalked through harassing phone calls too.
- Craven first scripted his own on-screen character as a man driven insane by nightmares who had cut off his own eyelids to stay awake, pursued by Michael Berryman's character from The Hills Have Eyes, before settling on a comforting house in the Hollywood Hills.
- Wes Craven kept most of the wardrobe from the first A Nightmare on Elm Street as souvenirs before New Line Cinema threw it all away, and reused some of the clothing in New Nightmare.
- The part of Heather Langenkamp's on-screen husband Chase, a special effects artist, was first offered to her real-life husband David LeRoy Anderson, who declined it as too close to the bone.
