Plot summary
Carroll Barber has been living in England and comes to Los Angeles so that the singer Eric Wood can record an album of his songs. His manager, Susan Moore, brings him there and rents him a house from Ann Goode, a real estate agent. Ann is unhappily married to Jack Goode, who owns a furniture store and pursues the housemaid Linda Murray. Linda wants a relationship with Ken Hood, a married young executive who works long hours for Carroll's father, Carl Barber, at the family dairy. Ken's wife, Karen, is a housewife and mother drawn to taxi rides and to the Greta Garbo movie Camille. Susan expects Carroll to resume the affair they once had. Carl has not seen his son in three years.

- Welcome to L.A. was picketed on its first day in Los Angeles; director Alan Rudolph recalled protesters chanting "This movie is vile, vile, vile" at what was the first public screening of his life.
- Composer Richard Baskin, whom Rudolph met while working on Nashville, had written a suite of nine songs titled "City of the One Night Stands"; Rudolph thought he could make a film based on them and wrote what became Welcome to L.A.
- The film was not a large box office success but was highly regarded, and it led Ridley Scott to hire Harvey Keitel and Keith Carradine for The Duellists.
