Plot summary
Socorro is a lawyer in her sixties who has spent decades trying to learn which soldier killed her brother Coque in the Tlatelolco massacre of 1968. She lives with her sister Esperanza in an apartment in Tlatelolco, largely isolated, and her bond with Esperanza and with her son Jorge, who grew up in the shadow of her unresolved grief, is strained. Jorge's wife, Lucía, is closer to her. The seventy-fifth birthday her brother would have had brings a package long thought lost, and with it the name of the soldier in the last photograph of Coque: Juan Agúndez. Socorro sets out to find him, helped by the porter of her building, Siddartha, and blackmails a magistrate in Mexico City, once her superior, for a hitman's contact.
