Plot summary
Two genetically altered life forms are turned loose from a secret laboratory. One is a golden retriever with a super-intelligent mind, able to make itself understood and to reason. The other is a hybrid assassin with nothing human in it, made to track the retriever and to destroy everyone who comes near it. The dog finds and befriends Paul Ferguson, a fugitive Marine. The dog presses him to get in touch with an animal psychologist from the laboratory where the genetic work was done. The psychologist joins them, and together they try to stay out of reach of the creature that follows them.
