Plot summary
The story unfolds as the reminiscences of a character called the Old Soldier, who recites "Strange Meeting" in its prologue. In World War I, the British soldier Wilfred Owen serves in the trenches, where examples of cruelty surround him. Troubled by what he sees, he keeps hope alive through his love for an army nurse. Other figures of the war appear, among them Abraham, the Unknown Soldier, the German Soldier, a Mother and the Blinded Soldier. The film adapts a musical piece of the same name, and its soundtrack is a 1963 recording of that piece, heard on its own with no added sound effects.
