Waiting for the Light (1990) on Netflix

Plot summary

In the early 1960s, Kay Harris, a single mother living in Chicago, learns she has inherited a diner in a Washington State town and moves there gladly to run it, bringing her young son and daughter and her aunt Zena. Zena, a former magician and vaudevillian, is mentally unstable and fills the household with magic tricks, which she teaches the children. A neighbor named Mullins, an ill-tempered man, beat the children with a belt after they stole his apples, so Zena has them stage a ghost to get even. The trick misfires, and Mullins takes the sight for a vision of an angel.
