Plot summary
A handful of corporations dominate the world of 2047, and politicians let online games called verses keep the masses docile. More than three quarters of the population spend most of their lives there. After a computer virus attack on the verses kills 148 gamers, Dina, an operative at Synternis Corporation, hires Nash, a shadow agent, to find and eliminate the group behind it, the Necromancers. Nash divides his time between the online world and reality, and the death of Helena in an earlier virus attack still haunts him. He brings in Morel, Helena's brother and a hacker, to break into security video held on Interpol servers, and Synternis moves to keep Interpol from learning about the attack at all.
