Plot summary

Havana in the 1950s. Simón is a boat skipper involved in human trafficking, carrying illegal immigrants on the crossing to New York and abandoning them once they land. Andrés, a young and idealistic sailor, crews for him, and when the coastguard discovers the boat it is Andrés who saves Simón's life. Madame runs a house where girls recruited by Simón are schooled to marry rich older men. Marie, one of those girls, is the skipper's protegée. Andrés becomes infatuated with Marie, and his feeling for the girl under Simón's protection brings him into conflict with the man whose life he saved.
