Plot summary
Eve has spent her life on a privately run prison island, and when a shipwrecked man's boat is left on its coast, she takes it and reaches the mainland. There she is on her own, in a society where people have their feelings shaped by drugs and by artificial worlds, and she trades sex for money and food. A rich woman takes her home, feeds her and dresses her, and introduces her to a virtual world that only those with money can enter; the woman lives on payments from a former husband. The corporation that owns the island has noticed that one of its inmates is gone and has started a search for her. Eve meets Vegas, a policeman, at a bar kept by Peyton.
