- At a Vienna showing of Vampyr, audiences demanded their money back. When this was denied, a riot broke out and police restored order with night sticks.
- Nicolas de Gunzburg, an aristocrat, agreed to finance Vampyr in exchange for playing the lead role. After family arguments about his acting, he created the pseudonym Julian West, a name that worked in all three languages of the film.
- Jan Hieronimko, who plays the village doctor in Vampyr, was found on a late-night Paris metro train. He reportedly stared blankly and did not reply when approached, but later contacted Dreyer's crew and agreed to join.
- Cinematographer Rudolph Maté accidentally shot a fuzzy, blurred shot that Dreyer liked. Dreyer then had Maté shoot the rest of Vampyr through a piece of gauze held three feet from the camera to recreate the washed-out look.
SPOILER
The original script for Vampyr had the village doctor trapped in a swamp. Dreyer changed the ending to a flour mill after his team saw strange white shadows dancing around a house that turned out to be a plaster mill.- The sounds of dogs, parrots, and other animals in Vampyr were not real animal recordings; they were created by professional human animal imitators.
