Plot summary
Paul Orlac, a world-famous pianist, is on tour while his wife Yvonne waits at home for him. On the journey back the train wrecks at Montgeron, and his hands are badly injured. Yvonne pleads with Dr. Serral to save them, since playing is his life. Elsewhere, the robber and murderer Vasseur, who insists he is innocent, is sentenced to death after an investigator finds his fingerprints at the scene of the crime. Dr. Serral grafts Vasseur's hands onto Orlac. As he recovers, Orlac senses that something is wrong with his new hands, and when he asks the surgeon about them, he learns they came from a criminal. He resolves never to touch Yvonne with them again.

- Saxony's Ministry of the Interior applied on 10 January 1925 to have The Hands of Orlac censored, arguing that showing how police took fingerprints, and how criminals might erase them, would hinder the fight against crime; the Higher Inspectorate refused, after a Berlin police expert called the film's methods unrealistic.
