Plot summary

Siegfried, the son of King Siegmund of Xanten, forges his own sword and sets out for Worms, the capital of the Burgundian kingdom, after hearing of Kriemhild, the sister of King Gunther. On the road he kills a dragon and bathes in its blood, and he overcomes Alberich, the dwarf king of the Nibelungen, who wears a cap that makes its wearer invisible or changes his shape. Alberich's surrender brings Siegfried the Treasure of the Nibelungen, the sword Balmung and twelve kings as his vassals. At Worms, Gunther agrees to let Siegfried marry Kriemhild on one condition: Siegfried must use the cap to help Gunther win Brunhild, the warrior queen of Iceland, in her contests of stone throwing, spear and leap.
