Plot summary
In Paris around 1902, Claude Roc lives with his widowed mother. Ann Brown, the daughter of an old family friend, visits and asks Claude to spend the summer on the Welsh coast with her mother and her sister Muriel. Ann enjoys Claude's company, but she hopes he might marry Muriel, who is introverted and has trouble with her eyesight. Over the summer Claude and Muriel grow close, and he wins over her early reluctance until she agrees to marry him. Madame Roc, saying she worries about their health, and Mrs. Brown agree that the couple must spend a year apart, with no letters or contact at all, before the marriage can go ahead.
