Plot summary
Orphaned identical twins Maria and Frieda Gellhorn leave their home for Karnstein, to live with their aunt Katy and their uncle Gustav Weil. Weil spends his nights leading the Brotherhood, a Puritan band that burns suspected witches and vampires, though Count Karnstein escapes him. Karnstein keeps the Emperor's favor, practices black magic and kills a village girl as a sacrifice, which raises the vampire Countess Mircalla Karnstein from her tomb. Resenting her uncle's severity, Frieda steals away to the Count's castle at night, and Maria covers for her absence. At school the teacher Anton Hoffer takes an interest in Frieda, though she finds the Count more fascinating.
