Plot summary
Hikari Katakura is fourteen and still in junior high school when she becomes pregnant by a classmate. Because she has not yet begun to menstruate, she learns of the pregnancy too late for an abortion, and her family, fearing gossip, sends her to Baby Baton, an association that places babies with couples who cannot have children. Meanwhile Satoko and Kiyokazu Kurihara learn that Kiyokazu cannot father a child and that fertility treatment will not help; a television program about Baby Baton points them toward adoption. Hikari gives birth to a boy, Asato, and the Kuriharas take him home, meeting Hikari once before the adoption. Six years later, with Satoko at home raising Asato, a woman who says she is the boy's birth mother telephones.
