Plot summary
An alien invasion leaves Earth under constant rain and darkness, and the humans who survive live in underground cities. Generations later, a small group of rebels plans to take the world back. A patrol under Lt. Blackthorn goes out to seize a Z-bot, one of the machines, and the machines ambush it. General Van Ryberg of the Military and Science Guilds reinstates Warren Mitchell, court-martialed with his right-hand man Itchy and kept in cryogenic freeze for insubordination. Mitchell takes command of a patrol with Itchy and Flight Commander Xandria Lux, sent to bring back a Z-bot intact and study its fuel cells. The plan is to contaminate a fuel cell and use a large radio tower to shut the machines down.
