Plot summary

Arjan van Diemen, a renowned Afrikaner commando leader and tracker in the Second Boer War, leaves South Africa for Auckland after the British win the war. Sergeant-Major Saunders, who fought against him, recognizes him at once and has him arrested, but Major Carlysle, the officer commanding the garrison, respects his old opponent and sets him free. Kereama, a Māori harpooner off a whaling ship, is accused of killing a soldier in a brawl at an army stable and runs, believing that no trial would be fair to him. Carlysle assembles a posse, including the civilian tracker Bryce, and offers van Diemen a reward to join the hunt. Van Diemen and Bryce disagree about the trail, and van Diemen sets out on his own.
