Plot summary
Someone is sending Jack Dobson letters that threaten him. Jack works homicides in Palm Beach, and he and his partner Steve Frayn try to work out who the sender is. One possibility is Tony Garidi, a mob figure Jack is due to testify against. Another is that the letters are meant to cause trouble for Jack's brother Michael, who is campaigning for public office. Women then start turning up dead, and the killer leaves lipstick traces on them. Each of the women who dies has a tie to Jack. He has started seeing Ellen Schofield. Suspects are numerous and leads are scarce.
