Plot summary
A chosen family of six, four gay men and a lesbian couple, all teenagers in Los Angeles, is scraping by after their parents threw them out of their homes. The friends are Andy, Steven, Deric, Tommy, Michele and Patricia. Most of them are out and settled in their sexuality. Steven carries a camcorder and interviews them about being young and queer in the city. Money is short, and Steven's infidelity strains his relationship with Deric. Gay-bashers harass them. Andy calls himself totally fucked up. Michele and Patricia want to have a child. Their story unfolds in fifteen segments, spliced with interviews and tangents.

- The film was made with virtually no crew: Gregg Araki operated the camera himself as cinematographer, joined only by a sound person, the producer/PA and whichever cast members the scene needed, all shot on 16 mm.
- To make the film feel authentic, writer-director Gregg Araki cast real teenagers rather than adult actors to play each of the roles.
- One of the characters uses a handheld video camcorder to interview the others about their lives; the technique had first appeared in a major theatrical release with Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989) and spread through 1990s films such as Reality Bites and The Blair Witch Project.
