Plot summary
The adults in Amanda Sue Bradley's life have always failed her. When she speaks up about her stepfather's sexual abuse, both her mother and her stepfather leave her. A marriage that does not last takes her out of town, and she falls in with Billy Canton, a hustler who draws her into drugs and strip clubs, mistreats her and claims part of the money she earns. A chance meeting with a soldier, Mike Medwicki, gives her somewhere to live while she gets back on her feet, and the two become lovers though Amanda is still a child. When Mike's commanding officer learns of the relationship, Mike breaks it off.

- Though the film is set in Oklahoma, it is loosely based on Attina Marie Cannaday, who with David Gray killed Ronald Wojcik with a knife in Harrison County, Mississippi, on June 3, 1982.
- At her trial, Cannaday was a sixteen-year-old divorcee who had married at thirteen and divorced at fourteen; she was convicted of the kidnapping and murder of U.S. Air Force Sergeant Ronald Wojcik and sentenced to death by lethal injection.
- Cannaday's guilty verdict was upheld, but her death sentence was reversed in 1984 in Cannaday v. State and she was re-sentenced to one life and two 25-year terms; she was released on parole on March 9, 2008.
- The case's co-defendant David Randolph Gray was also sentenced to death by lethal injection; his sentence was reversed in May 1987 by the U.S. Supreme Court in Gray v. Mississippi because a qualified juror had been excluded from his trial.
