Plot summary
Keshav is 36 and still unmarried, working with his brother Naru in the cycle business their father runs near Mathura. Their father, Pandit Vimalnath Sharma, is a superstitious priest with firm ideas about the bride his son needs. Keshav meets Jaya, a college-educated woman from a well-off family, and persuades her to marry him. She moves into his family home, where the women of the village walk out to the fields before dawn. On her first morning there Jaya finds no toilet in the house, and she will not remain in a home without one. Keshav tries to keep her with him while his father and the village elders see no reason to change.

- Toilet: Ek Prem Katha is based on the true story of Anita Narre of Madhya Pradesh, who refused to go back to her husband Shivram's home because it had no toilet. After the film's ending, a photograph of the couple with Bhumi Pednekar is shown and the real story is noted as a subtitle.
- Filmmaker Praveen Vyas sent the makers of Toilet: Ek Prem Katha a legal notice, claiming the film plagiarised scenes and dialogues from his documentary Manini, which dealt with the same subject.
