Plot summary
When Rivka dies of cancer, her husband Shmuel, a Hasidic cantor who lives in Upstate New York, is left with his mother, his two sons and a longing he cannot answer. His mother tells him to move on and marry again, and the boys decide a dibbuk, Rivka's spirit, has moved into their father. Shmuel keeps returning to one question: what happens to a body after burial, and how quickly it turns to dust. He goes to a rabbi first, seeking religious solace, then approaches Albert, a professor of biology at a local community college. The two men begin a partnership they keep secret.
