Plot summary
At a mill, three peasants, Yohachi, Gosaku and Jinbei, are holding Aya, the daughter of the local magistrate. They demand that the regional lord lower the taxes that are starving them and refuse to release the girl when the magistrate's soldiers offer clemency; the soldiers' sneak attack fails. The lord sends a second party, among them his samurai Kikyo and the roaming samurai Kyôjûrô Sakura. Sakon Shiba, a ronin who has come upon the mill, sides with the peasants and persuades Sakura to change sides. The magistrate hires mercenaries and seizes Gosaku's daughter Yasu. The two camps agree that Aya goes free and the peasants unharmed if Shiba accepts a hundred blows.
